How WhatsApp Sticker Search Works

WhatsApp finds stickers by the emoji their publisher tagged them with, not by reading the image. What that means for finding a sticker, and for anyone building a pack.
Updated

Quick answer

WhatsApp's sticker search matches the emoji tags a publisher attaches to each sticker file — up to three per sticker — rather than analysing the picture. Searching the sticker panel for an emoji or the feeling it represents surfaces stickers tagged with it, so a well-tagged pack is far easier to find than a better-drawn one that was tagged carelessly.

Search reads tags, not pictures

Every sticker file in a third-party pack carries a small amount of metadata, and the part that drives discovery is its emoji tags. WhatsApp's own documentation for pack authors asks for up to three emoji per sticker, chosen to describe what the sticker portrays, and says explicitly that this is what helps users find the stickers through search and categories.

So the search box is matching a publisher's labels. A beautifully drawn crying sticker that nobody tagged with 😢 is, as far as search is concerned, untagged.

Finding a sticker faster

  • Search the feeling rather than the subject — the tags are emoji, so "laugh" and 😂 land closer than a character's name.
  • Try the obvious emoji first. Publishers reach for the common ones.
  • Recents is usually faster than search for anything you send often.
  • If a pack never appears, it is likely thinly tagged rather than missing.

If you are building a pack

Tagging is the cheapest thing you can do to make a pack usable, and it is where most packs are weakest. Three rules cover most of it:

  1. Tag every sticker, not just the first few. Untagged stickers are invisible to search.
  2. Use up to three emoji, and pick ones a person would actually type — the common emoji for the emotion beats a clever, obscure one.
  3. Tag what the sticker means, not what is in it. A picture of a cat looking unimpressed wants 🙄, not only 🐱.

WhatsApp also accepts a short accessibility description per sticker — up to 125 characters for a static sticker and 255 for an animated one. It is read by screen readers, and it costs a minute per pack.

Why pack order matters too

Packs appear in the tray in the order they were added, and the tray icon is the only label a person sees while swiping. A distinctive 96 × 96 tray icon does more for day-to-day findability than any amount of tagging, because most sticker use is browsing rather than searching.

That has a practical consequence for anyone publishing. The tray icon is not a shrunk-down sticker: at 96 pixels a detailed illustration turns to mush, and a pack whose icon is unreadable gets scrolled past no matter how good the stickers are. Pick one strong, simple shape with high contrast, and check it at actual size before shipping.

Search inside WhatsApp is not the same as finding a pack

Two different searches get confused with each other. The sticker panel in WhatsApp searches the packs you have already added, using the emoji tags described above — it will never show you a pack you have not installed. Finding a new pack happens outside WhatsApp, on a catalogue site or a store listing, where packs are organised by the hashtags and titles their publisher entered.

  • Looking for a sticker you own — use the sticker panel's search.
  • Looking for a pack you do not own yet — browse a catalogue by hashtag or category.
  • Looking for a pack you had on an old phone — reinstall the sticker app that provided it.

Knowing which of the two you are doing saves a surprising amount of time, and it explains the most common complaint about sticker search: that it never seems to find anything new. It is not supposed to.

WhatsApp only accepts sticker packs from an installed app, so the last step always happens outside the browser. Sticko is free on Android and iPhone, and adds any pack to WhatsApp in a couple of taps.

Frequently asked questions

How does WhatsApp decide which stickers match my search?

It matches the emoji tags the pack's publisher attached to each sticker file — up to three per sticker. WhatsApp does not analyse the artwork, so a sticker's findability depends entirely on how carefully it was tagged.

Why can I not find a sticker I know I have?

It is probably tagged sparsely or with unusual emoji. Browse the pack directly in the sticker tray instead of searching, and use Recents for stickers you send regularly.

How many emoji can a sticker be tagged with?

Up to three per sticker file, chosen by the publisher to describe what the sticker portrays. WhatsApp recommends picking emoji that best represent the sticker so people can find it through search and categories.

Does tagging affect whether a pack ranks on a sticker site?

No — these emoji tags live inside the sticker files and drive search inside WhatsApp. A catalogue site like Sticko organises packs by the hashtags a publisher enters when uploading, which is a separate thing.
