Quick answer
The sticker packs people keep are the ones that read clearly at chat size and cover reactions they send often. Favour packs of 15–30 stickers with bold, simple artwork, keep two or three animated packs at most, and treat download counts as a popularity signal rather than a quality rating.
Legibility at chat size beats detail
Stickers are authored at 512 × 512 and displayed at roughly 64–128 pixels. That gap is where most disappointment comes from: a pack that looks striking in a catalogue grid can be unreadable in a conversation. Bold shapes, high contrast and few elements survive the reduction; fine linework, small text and busy scenes do not.
A quick test before installing: look at the pack's thumbnails at the size they appear in a listing, not the enlarged preview. If you cannot tell what a sticker is at that size, it will not be clearer in a chat.
Pack size changes what a pack is for
| Stickers in pack | What it is good for |
|---|---|
| 3–8 | A single joke or a narrow theme. Fun briefly, rarely kept. |
| 9–15 | One clear mood or character. Used often if the theme matches how you talk. |
| 16–30 | A general-purpose reaction set. These are the packs that stay installed. |
Thirty is the maximum WhatsApp allows, so a full pack is as broad as a single pack can be. Most people end up relying on two or three large packs and cycling through smaller novelty ones.
Reading download and like counts honestly
Download counts measure reach, not quality. A pack with tens of thousands of installs has cleared a basic bar — the artwork works at chat size and enough people found it worth keeping — but popularity also compounds, so early packs accumulate counts that newer, better ones have not had time to reach.
Likes behave differently. They skew towards packs that are funny rather than useful, which makes them a good signal for novelty packs and a poor one for the everyday reaction set you will actually lean on.
Neither number is a rating. They are engagement counts, and no one has reviewed the pack to assign it a score.
How many animated packs to keep
Animated stickers are loud by design. They are the right answer for celebration, shock and teasing, and the wrong one for acknowledging a message. Because a pack is either fully animated or fully static, animation is a property of the whole pack — so keeping a handful of animated packs alongside a larger static set gives the most range.
Two or three animated packs is where most people settle. Beyond that the tray becomes hard to scan, and the effect wears off.
Following a publisher is more reliable than following a pack
Sticker art is strongly authored. If a pack's style suits you, the same publisher's other packs usually will too — the drawing style, the humour and the level of detail carry across. Publisher name is shown on every pack's detail page and is a better predictor of whether you will like a pack than any count.
Where to browse
- Trending shows what is being installed right now — good for finding packs before they saturate.
- Most downloaded is the all-time list, weighted towards older packs.
- Newest is where original work appears first, before it accumulates any counts at all.
- Hashtag pages narrow to a theme, and are publisher-tagged rather than algorithmically assigned.
